The Master of Arts in English program seeks to equip students with scholarly competence in literary studies and research writing at the graduate level.  In accordance with Campbellsville University’s mission statement, the Master of Arts in English program helps students to develop and excel at graduate-level skills in writing, reading, and critical thinking; and to interpret, value, and practice the creative artistry, insightful thought, and human capacity expressed through the literature of diverse time periods, cultures, and personalities.  Furthermore, the program encourages students to grow personally through self-expression and careful reflection and to improve professionally through mastery of content and well-supported analytic thought.  Ultimately, through this program, students become well-prepared, competent scholarly writers; insightful critical readers; and skilled communicators, able to succeed in further academic study, lead in the workplace, and enrich the lives of others through responsible, caring service.

Composed of thirty graduate credit hours, the Master of Arts in English is a fully online program.  The program also includes a face-to-face format option.  Online classes involve direct engagement with faculty through some synchronous components and required individual conferences.

Students may take twenty-four hours of regular coursework followed by six hours of thesis credit, completing the M.A. program by writing a thesis and defending it orally.  Alternately, students take thirty hours of coursework, culminating the program with a written exit exam.

M.A. in English: 30 Hours

Topics in Literature before 1660: 3 Hours


Thesis or Additional Electives: 6 Hours


Students may take 2 additional electives (6 hours) and a Written Exit Exam OR ENG 691 and ENG 692 (6 Hours) and an Oral Thesis Defense.
